My Partner Makes News
Assignment Objective:
Create messages appropriate to the audience, purpose and context
Assignment Description:
"My Partner Makes News" was a 25-point assignment where students embarked on their own news story. Interviewing a partner, information was collected to pinpoint a single, key event in their life, as well as background information that would accompany the feature story. This assignment serves as an example of journalistic writing, a skill not taught in any other class at St. Norbert College. My article featured 2019 graduate Conner Lowery, who achieved the rank of Eagle Scout.
Hinsdale Boy Scout soars
Just over one thousand Boy Scouts ascend to the ranking of Eagle Scout per year, requiring vigorous service and demonstration of Boy Scout principles. Hinsdale teen, Conner Lowery, met all requirements, earning his Eagle badge and medal in September of 2015.
A ceremony including friends and family recognized Lowery’s 10-year dedication to his troop and the completion of his Eagle Scout service project, one of the final steps before applying for Eagle Scout.
“At our community center there was a counseling room and I repainted it, got new furniture, new books, new appliances,” explained Lowery. “And then to open it . . . I got a local pizza place to donate pizza for the group and then donate money.”
In reflection, Lowery spoke about the benefits of becoming involved in scouts.
“Scouting gave me life experience that I wouldn’t normally have, like to ability to develop skills  . . . like camping,” Lowery said. “I live in suburbia, so no one camps there, other than being a boy scout. Hadn’t I joined, I probably wouldn’t have learned those skills.”
Despite becoming an Eagle Scout, the highest rank available in scouting, Lowery has maintained steady involvement. He teaches merit badges at Boy Scout summer camps and uses the Boy Scout values of trustworthy, loyal, helpful, friendly, courteous, kind, obedient, cheerful, thrifty, brave, clean and reverent to guide his everyday decisions.
